Ever wonder how a turtle gets its shell? Or rather, how it came to be? Apparently it’s actually bone. Ribs, shoulder bones, vertebrae all fused together, and you can see it in the Fossil Record, with Eunotosaurus being a good transition fossil in understanding the evolution of the turtle shell.

Guess what my grandparents got me on their not-so-fun & dreadfully terrible trip to China? Yoga Lin albums like I asked them to! The album on the left came with a DVD, but they understood what I meant this time around! Aaaaah so happy. And yes. Music is always newsworthy. Especially if it is me acquiring it.

I need to repay my grandparents somehow. Because that trip was NOT easy. And these two together was about 113 yuan, which is about $18.50 or something. Muuuuch cheaper than importing them (hell, I can’t even get a physical CD off Amazon). Holy shit. But still. I need to thank them somehow.

Something to distract you guys if you have a Last.FM account. Apparently, this site can sort your songs to give you a total percentage of what musical key you listen to the most and least (and everything in between).

And once you do that, try looking up what sort of personality your favored key has. I am not quite sure if that tells you something, but it is fun to think about. Or dreadfully depressing for some folks. Maybe.

So I guess stretching before you go out for your morning run may not be as great as it’s believed to be.

Instead, researchers have discovered, this so-called static stretching can lessen jumpers’ heights and sprinters’ speeds, without substantially reducing people’s chances of hurting themselves.

I guess Zombieland got rule #18 wrong. Don’t limber up. It might just slow you down long enough to get your tendons ripped out.

Instead, maybe change rule #18 to “Warm up.“ It might do you some good to do some jumping jacks and high kicks before you go decide to go into a potential zombie infested hell hole. Just a thought.

It turns out the father of evolution saw in the bird an amazing variety of variation in color, shape and form. Richard Bailey, a photographer based in London, honored the 150th anniversary since the publication of “On the Origin of Species” and the 200th anniversary in 2009 of Charles Darwin’s birth by photographing some of the pigeon breeds that played such an important part in Darwin’s work.”

Aaaahhhhh so much variation from your lowly common pigeon. As much as people complain about them all the time, I will still love them regardless.

I never even thought this was possible. Non-profits shouldn’t harass volunteers who have done nothing but good work and devote their time to the organization’s mission. Neither should non-profits mislead their volunteers. Nor should they cover up their “mistakes” instead of being forthright and truthful to their donors. You don’t just poo-poo it away and say, “Oh, we’ll just make more money” and then sue the person you told all of that to.

Heck, even if the volunteer is terrible at what he/she does, I don’t think harassment would be deserved. Let alone a freaking lawsuit, unless the volunteer somehow caused massive irreparable damage, like destroying parts of a health clinic and maiming all the patients as a result or some terrible stuff like that.

If anyone can, please sign it, pass it along, what have you. My friend actually has relations that know Mr. Young, so he is definitely real.

This is one of those stories that I see somewhere and think “wow, this would be great on the Tumblr!” and then I read it and I want to run home and hide and never eat anything but food I have grown myself ever again. Aspergillus flavus is a mold that thrives in hot, dry weather, just like last year’s epic drought in the U.S. It has rendered huge portions of corn crops unsaleable; just the equivalent of 100 kernels per truckload of corn turns the whole lot into garbage. Haha. Scary indeed. I wonder what kind of solutions will arise from this. Surely, you can’t control the weather. Is this going to lead to breeding for lines that are resistant? Or special greenhouses or closed conditions for raising corn where you can adjust the temperature? And I worry about the repercussions of such developments for poorer corn farmers who can’t afford such adjustments.
